This isn't accurate. The practice of wearing uniforms or closely matching clothes by family members in occasions didn't start with the Yoruba people — or any particular group. However, the term "Asoebi" is of Yoruba origin. The term became widely adopted as many ethnic groups flooded Lagos and got used to the term, carried the term back home, hence the wide usage of it. Today, many ethnic groups and families wear uniforms for occasions without even hearing or know the meaning of "Asoebi." Again, the term is of Yoruba origin but not the practice.
